None of this was ever meant to be a product
Think of the oldest morning you can remember. Someone is awake before the rest of the house. A lamp is lit. A thumb presses kumkum onto a forehead on the way out of the door — barely a pause, barely a thought, done ten thousand times.
Nobody bought any of it.
The turmeric was ground at home. The vibhuti came from the temple. The chandan was worked against wet stone until it gave up its scent. These things were made properly for the plainest reason there is: the people making them were the people using them.
Then they became products
And products get cheaper. It happened quietly, over decades, to the smallest things in the house.
Dye took the place of turmeric — brighter, faster, and it does not fade. Fragrance oil took the place of sandalwood, because real chandan is slow and expensive and synthetic smells almost the same. Paraffin took the place of Bhimseni camphor, and now the flame goes out in seconds and leaves a black ring behind.
None of it is illegal. All of it is cheaper. And almost nobody questions it, because these are small purchases made in a hurry, for rituals we perform without thinking.
But this is what goes on your forehead. What is offered to your deity. What burns in your home while your family stands around it. We could not make peace with the cheapest possible version of that.
So we make them the old way
Not as a style. As a method.
- Kumkum from turmeric and lime, the way it has always been made — which is why our red is deeper and quieter than the packet at the corner shop. That is what the colour looks like when it is not dye.
- Chandan that smells of sandalwood because there is sandalwood in it.
- Vibhuti prepared as bhasma, fine and cool and white, with no chalk and no bleach.
- Bhimseni camphor — real crystalline camphor, not paraffin. It burns slower, carries further, and leaves nothing behind.
This makes our products cost more than the alternative. That is simply the honest price of doing it properly, and we would rather charge it than explain away a shortcut.
A note from the founder
I did not set out to build a company. I set out to solve a smaller problem — finding kumkum I was willing to put on my own family's foreheads, and camphor that behaved the way camphor is supposed to behave.
It turned out to be harder than it should have been. Almost everything on the shelf was made to a price rather than to a standard, and the people selling it could not always tell me what was in it. So I started making my own, in small quantities, the way it was described to me by people who had been doing it far longer than I had.
Mahvika is what happened when other people began asking for it too.
We are a small operation, and I prefer it that way. Every batch passes through our own hands, and if something is not right you can write to us and reach an actual person — usually the same one who packed your order.

What we will always tell you
Our products are for external ritual use. We recommend a patch test before applying anything to skin. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a known allergy, please check with a qualified practitioner first. Camphor is flammable — use it in a proper lamp, and never leave a flame unattended.
We would rather tell you who should not use something than sell it to everyone.
